Why Organizational Products May Not Be the Answer
Organizational magazines have mastered the art of transforming the most utilitarian spaces like pantries and refrigerators into seductive, tantalizing, masterful spaces of well labeled rainbow colored storage. This may entice a reader to run out and buy all the products so that they can embark on the journey of order and elegance in their own home. However, is this the right journey for you? Will adding organizational products simplify your life?
A few things to consider before your run out and buy the latest products….
1. Space Constraints: Adding more products can consume valuable pantry/refrigerator space, making it harder to store items effectively.
2. Overcomplication: Too many organizational tools can lead to confusion and make it difficult to find items when they are needed. Or, if you change up your “staples” you may need to find a new home for those items.
3. Expense: It can be costly, and the investment may not yield proportional improvement in organization.
4. Maintenance: Maintaining and cleaning additional organizational items can be a time-consuming chore.
5. Sustainability: Introducing “more” plastic or metal products may not align with sustainability goals.
6. Time: It takes time to “decant” items into prettier storage solutions. Do you have the time and intention to do this each time you replace or purchase more groceries.
Instead of simply adding more products, consider this:
1. Declutter: Start by decluttering and getting rid of items you no longer need or have expired. This will create more space and make your pantry more organized.
2. Categorize: Group similar items together, such as canned goods, grains, snacks or veggies & drinks.
3. Use what you have. Before buying new products, look around your home for containers, baskets or bins. Or, simply use the boxes items come in. Tear off the lids so you can see inside the boxes.
4. Labeling: Labels can help you quickly identify items or assist family members in knowing where to return items.
5. Regular Maintenance: Set aside time for regular pantry/refrigerator maintenance. Staying organized is an intentional practice. It takes time and dedication.
