It doesn’t have to break the bank…

Organizing doesn’t have to break the bank. I have seen it over and over again, people go out and buy all the bins, buckets, tools, etc. But really, all you need is a starting point (and a few trash bags).

Take this garage for example. Yes, it would be so lovely to have a beautiful storage system like what you see in magazines or on The Container Store website. If you seen it, a Vision and Dream is a good place to start….but you don’t need it right away. What needs to happen is this:

  1. To categorize all the items in the garage. (Toys, Chemicals, Building Materials, Sports Equipment, Shoes, etc.)

In this process as you touch each item, you may decide it isn’t worth keeping because its broken or has been outgrown. Toss or donate it!

  2. Find a specific home or placement in the garage for these items.

Use Labels so that everyone in the home knows exactly where to find items and where to return them when finished.

  3. If you don’t have the right storage systems after determining what to keep, now go out and buy it!

For this garage, a second storage shelf made sense to house all the tools. I found one that was easy to assemble & keep clean. I also added a few additional hooks to hang lawn equipment. In a garage it is best to try and get items off the ground so that you can easily sweep or blow out the garage.

Now this client is ready and able to park her car in the garage this winter.
